We will be focusing on telling time, counting money, and also reviewing basic addition and subtraction skills. Remember. . . so many skills are faster and easier when your child knows the basic facts QUICKLY. If you chose lunch for the school, we will have that for them. If you chose cold lunch, please send that in on the morning of the field trip.
Snacks We are constantly in motion. The days move rather quickly and we sometimes need to refuel. We will be having snack time during the morning and again in the afternoon, as our lunch time is at 11:20. Please send a snack for your child. If you would like, you could send in an entire box/bag of cereal that they could nibble from throughout the week. Please send in healthy snacks. Another idea would be to pop a bag of popcorn at home and put some in a plastic bag, so they had some during snack time. If you have any questions, please contact me via e-mail or call me at the school.
REMIND If you are interested in joining our class with REMIND, I have sent home a flier. Just download the app, put in the code, and you are connected to reminders and any messages that I send out. You can also contact me that way and the only person who sees the message from you to me is me.

September 6, 2017
Welcome back! We had a successful first day of school and I’d like to take a moment and share a few activities that we are planning to partake in this year within the 3rd grade.
First, I will be sending home reading assignments. This will also count towards Book It. Our first book that we will be reading as a third grader will be, Henry Ford: Young Man with Ideas. Some of the books will be fiction, while others will be nonfiction. I am choosing books that will also coincide with what we are learning in the classroom. They will be assigned a chapter each night or a part of a chapter. Please check my website to find out what the assignment will be for each night. I will be doing my best to keep it up to date. It’s important the kids are reading as we will be discussing each chapter the next day.
Second, starting in October, we will be participating in Book It. I love Book It! Not only do they read, but they can also earn a free pizza, and this year, there is a chance to be entered into a drawing for a $10,000 college scholarship. I plan on starting the year right off with reading, so be expecting a book brought home daily! Your child is also free to choose whatever book he or she would like to read, in addition to the book I send home. If you are in need of extra books for your child to read, besides going to the school’s library weekly, you may also visit the Port Austin library and sign your child up for a library card to check out books. There, you can keep the book for two weeks before returning. It’s a great experience if you haven’t already been to the Port Austin library! Let’s keep our children reading and learning to channel new ideas and understanding!
Third, to bounce off the second idea, we will also be doing a theme each month for reading. For September, we will be squirrels, gathering ‘acorns’ to share as a class. As your child completes a book or a chapter from a book, there will be acorns for them to fill out and we will decorate the class. The acorn will ask for the title of the book, the author, and then a summary of what the book was about, a new word they encountered, or some other question. They will fill these out and we will collect them. At the end of the month, we will have a class activity, if our class is able to complete so many books individually and as a class. (This will be determined the first week of school!) Each month will have a different theme and I may ask for donations or volunteers during the end of the month activities. I want to make reading fun and keep our children reading and growing in knowledge!
Your child will need to basic supplies this year. This year's supply list includes: 24 Pencils (not mechanical) ****Please purchase the plain kind as they do not tear apart the classroom pencil sharpener. Eraser caps Lysol or Clorox wipes (2 containers) or send in baby wipes. We will wipe tables daily for grime and germs. Markers 24 pack crayons Colored pencils Scissors 4 glue sticks or 1 bottle of glue 1 pencil box or bag Box of tissue 3 wide ruled notebooks or reams of paper. 2 folders for materials to bring home
Lockers
Each child will have a locker. Some students will be sharing lockers. We will go over how to hang bookbags and jackets. When it comes time for winter boots, those too, will be kept in their locker along with hats and mittens/gloves.
Work outside the classroom!
September 15,--Read the 3-5 chapters in Henry Ford September 6--Read the second chapter in Henry Ford September 5--Read the first chapter In Henry Ford
Lunch and Physical Education
Your child will be given their own pin number for lunch that they will enter when they order hot lunch. This will also be found on skyward where you can keep track of how much lunch money they have.
Physical education is daily. We ask that you send a clean (they don't have to be new) pair of tennis shoes labeled with your child's name in the shoe so your child is ready for physical activity.
